When the first snowflakes fall, it means a whole new world for many dogs and cats to explore. It is a magical moment, but the cold and slippery conditions also bring risks. Here are some tips to make sure your winter walks with your pet stay safe and enjoyable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Protect your dog's paws<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snow and ice can be harmful to your dog's paws. Salt and other substances sprinkled on roads can irritate the skin and even cause burns. Consider special dog shoes to protect paws. If your dog does not like shoes, you can also apply a special paw balm to protect the skin from the cold and irritation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Beware of freezing in cold temperatures<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although many dogs love playing in the snow, prolonged exposure to very low temperatures can cause frostbite, especially in smaller breeds and dogs with short coats. Make sure your dog wears a warm coat and limit time outdoors during extremely cold days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Keep your animals inside during frosty days<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although some animals, especially cats, love to roam around outside, during winter it is important to keep them indoors when temperatures drop. The cold can be dangerous, especially if they are surprised by a snowstorm or slippery surfaces. Create a warm, cosy place inside where your cat can retreat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Ensure adequate hydration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As in summer, it is important that your pet gets enough water, even during winter. The cold can make them drink less, which can cause dehydration. Make sure you have fresh water, even when you are out and about. This is especially true if you take longer walks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Beware of ice and slippery surfaces<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slippery roads and frozen water surfaces pose a risk to both you and your pet. Make sure you keep your dog on a leash, especially near ponds and lakes. Ice can be dangerously thin, and you don't want your dog to suddenly end up in cold water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Early dark? Reflective gear is a must<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the winter months, it gets dark quickly. Make sure you make both yourself and your pet highly visible by attaching reflective collars, jackets or a light to the collar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With these tips, make sure you and your pet enjoy the winter to the fullest. Head out into the snow, let your pet play, but always make sure they stay warm, safe and protected!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
