Vet visit without drama!

Vet visit without drama!

Visiting the vet is often a challenge for both humans and animals. Cats hide, while dogs sometimes enter the practice with anxious looks and strange noises. But what if you can change that? With the right approach, a consultation becomes a lot less stressful.

Less stress, more peace of mind

For many animals, the vet feels like panic. That is why it is important to watch their behaviour before taking action. Do you see a cat that is withdrawing or a dog that is tense? If so, take this seriously! By first making contact with your animal and not forcing it right away, you can often make a big difference.

Sometimes it is enough to let an animal get used to the treatment for a while. For example, don't put a cat on the treatment table right away, but let it settle in its basket for a while. You can calm a dog by sitting at eye level and giving him a reward. These simple gestures create trust and calm.

A calm environment

Besides approach, environment also plays a big role. A busy, loud waiting room is stressful. But if you design the room in a calm and friendly way, you can already prevent a lot of anxiety. Think less bright lighting, soft sounds and places where an animal can retreat. Small adjustments have a big effect!

Hard materials such as metal can reflect sound and light, which is very unpleasant for animals. Many clinics nowadays therefore choose matt surfaces. This makes the environment much more pleasant for animals.

Recognition and the owner

A relaxed animal starts with a relaxed owner. The bond between owner and animal is strong; if the owner feels comfortable, the animal feels it. Explain what you are doing and why, so they don't have to worry. Do you need to put a muzzle on a dog? Then tell why it is necessary, so the owner understands that it is for the animal's well-being. Bringing a familiar blanket or toy can also calm your animal down.

Teamwork

It is not only the vet who has to put an animal at ease. The team also plays a big role. Assistants, practice managers and even receptionists can help by working in a calm manner. Holding a cat in a natural position or approaching a dog in a calm manner, these are small actions that add up to make a difference.
